Kielee and Travis’ Westcroft Gardens Grosse Ile Wedding
Wedding Photographer in Detroit, Michigan – Real Weddings, Real Connection
Being a wedding photographer in Detroit, Michigan means I get to capture everything from the city’s vibrant downtown to its quieter, waterfront communities. This wedding took place in the Detroit metro area on Grosse Ile—a small island with a relaxed, upscale feel that made the perfect backdrop for the day. I work with couples who want more than posed shots; they want images that feel like them, grounded in real connection.
Detroit’s reach extends well beyond its skyline, and Grosse Ile is a great example. From private waterfront homes to charming local churches, the island offers a mix of settings that photograph beautifully. In this post, I’ll walk you through how I approached this Grosse Ile wedding from start to finish, from getting ready to the last song of the night. You’ll also see my go-to tips for making the most of Detroit-area wedding locations.

About Humbly Hewn Photography in Detroit
I’m Erin Hassett, the one-woman show behind Humbly Hewn Photography. I live in Kansas City now, but I grew up in Downriver, Flat Rock specifically, and I’ll always think of Michigan as home. Every year, I book a few Detroit-area weddings as an excuse to come back—see my family, eat some square pizza, and photograph people in the places I know best.
My style is a mix of documentary and editorial. I’m not going to stage every move you make, but I will make sure the light and setting work in your favor. Whether it’s downtown Detroit, a Grosse Ile waterfront, or a small-town backyard, I’m here to capture the real moments without turning the day into a photoshoot.
Why Hiring a Detroit-Native Wedding Photographer Matters
Being based in Kansas City means I come to Michigan with fresh eyes, but growing up here means I already know the lay of the land. I know how the light hits the riverfront in late summer, where to dodge weekend traffic, and which spots are hidden gems for portraits.
That local knowledge comes with practical perks—like suggesting getting-ready spaces with great light or finding ceremony spots that balance beauty with accessibility. And because I know Michigan weather can turn on a dime, I always have backup portrait plans ready.
I only take on a handful of Michigan weddings each year, so when I’m here, I’m all in. Every time I come home to photograph a wedding, it’s with the same excitement I felt shooting my very first one.
Featured Wedding: Kielee & Travis at Westcroft Gardens, Grosse Ile
Kielee and Travis’s Westcroft Gardens wedding was the definition of relaxed and intentional. The venue is a private botanical garden on Grosse Ile with sweeping lawns, tree-lined paths, and river views that make you forget you’re just outside Detroit.
Their ceremony was under a canopy of trees with the water in the background. Guests sat close, the breeze moved through the branches, and every detail felt personal. We moved through the gardens for portraits—wide shots in open spaces, quiet moments in the shade—and down to the water for golden light.
The reception was in a white botanical tent with one long table of candles and greenery, anchored by a hanging installation of floating candle globes. As the sun set, the glow inside the tent made the space feel like it was built just for them.

Getting Ready on Grosse Ile – A Morning at Home
I spent the morning of the wedding with Kielee and her bridesmaids at her childhood home on Grosse Ile. It was one of those spaces that feels effortlessly refined—every room curated but never overdone. Her family has an incredible eye for design, and it showed in the muted color palette, clean lines, and thoughtful details throughout the house.
From a photographer’s perspective, the natural light in her home was ideal. Large windows filled the rooms with soft, even light, making it easy to capture both the quiet in-between moments and the laughter spilling out of the kitchen. With Westcroft Gardens just minutes away, there was no rush. We could take our time, soak in the moment, and step into the day without the usual wedding-day chaos.

Westcroft Gardens Ceremony – Nature as the Backdrop
Kielee and Travis chose to hold their ceremony in one of Westcroft Gardens’ most serene spots—tucked beneath a canopy of mature trees with the Detroit River just beyond. The setting didn’t need elaborate décor; the garden itself provided all the texture and color you could ask for.
The light that afternoon was perfect—filtered through layers of leaves so it stayed soft and flattering, even as the sun shifted. One of my favorite moments came at the very end—white flower petals sailing through the air as Kielee and Travis made their way back down the aisle. The mix of laughter, cheers, and floating petals made for some of my favorite images of the day.

Portrait Sessions on Grosse Ile – Effortless in the Gardens
Westcroft Gardens made portraits almost too easy. The property is filled with winding paths, open lawns, and tucked-away corners that all seem designed for great light. On Kielee and Travis’s wedding day, the sun filtered softly through the trees, creating an even, flattering glow everywhere we went.
We didn’t need to travel far or overcomplicate the process. The gardens offered variety without the stress of multiple locations—wide, airy spaces for the big, cinematic shots and shaded nooks for close, intimate moments. Every turn revealed a new composition, and because everything was so close, we could move seamlessly from family photos to couple portraits without losing momentum.

Capturing the Reception Energy
The reception took place inside a white botanical tent that instantly became one of my favorite lighting scenarios I’ve ever photographed. The soft white canopy acted like a giant diffuser, evening out the light and making every photo—whether it was a toast, a first dance, or a candid laugh—look clean and flattering.
With fewer than 50 guests, the atmosphere was intimate but full of energy. The florist and planner designed one long tablescape with simple greenery and candles. Above it, a hanging installation of more greenery and candlelit globes became the centerpiece as the sun set and the glow inside the tent turned golden.

Downriver + Grosse Ile Wedding Venues I Love Shooting At
Westcroft Gardens is an obvious favorite, but the downriver area and Grosse Ile have plenty more to offer. Grosse Ile Yacht Club brings classic waterfront elegance, while smaller venues and private estates allow for highly personalized celebrations. On the mainland, spots like Flat Rock Community Center give couples flexibility and space without sacrificing style.
These venues share one thing in common—they’re all connected to the water, trees, and open skies that make this part of Michigan special.

What to Expect When You Book Humbly Hewn Photography
When you book me for your wedding, you’re getting more than someone with a camera. You’re getting a photographer who blends in, reads the room, and captures moments as they happen. I guide where it’s helpful, but I’m never pulling you out of your own day for the sake of a shot.
Booking includes planning calls, timeline input, and location scouting. I personally edit every final image, delivering 600–900 fully edited photos in a private online gallery. My aim is simple—when you look back at your photos, you’ll feel like you’re right back in the moment.

From there, we’ll keep in touch, refine the plan, and make sure everything is ready so you can just show up and enjoy your wedding.

FAQs
How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in Detroit, Michigan?
Most couples book 9–18 months in advance. I only take on a few Michigan weddings per year, so sooner is better.
Do you charge extra for travel to Detroit or Grosse Ile weddings?
I do ask for a small travel fee to cover my drive (yes, I’m a Midwesterner and I prefer to drive with my gear instead of check it on a flight!). I plan these trips around family visits so we’re talking gas money only - a huge travel discount when considering the savings on flights, baggage and hotel stay!
Can you help us choose photo locations around Detroit or Grosse Ile?
Yes. I’ll suggest spots that fit your style, timeline, and light conditions—whether waterfront, urban, or garden.
